Greening the blue mud!

چکیده

The happiest teacher should have married ‘three wives’, namely: teaching, research and social service. I did so for the sake of mangroves: sites of ecological wonder and scenic splendor. Boat rides through the sun-dappled waterways in the mangrove forests attracted me. The breath-taking beauty of the coastal forest, with its arching roots, breathing roots, salt-vomiting leaves and ‘mud dancing’fish has been a main source of inspiration, leading me to explore mangroves for the last two decades. Habitat complexity influences cascading effects of multiple predators.

Although multiple predator effects and trophic cascades have both been demonstrated in a wide variety of ecosystems, ecologists have yet to incorporate these studies into an experimental framework that also manipulates a common and likely important factor, spatial heterogeneity. We manipulated habitat complexity, the presence of two top predators (toadfish and blue crabs), and one intermediate ...

Bioactive molecules from the Blue Lagoon: in vitro and in vivo assessment of silica mud and microalgae extracts for their effects on skin barrier function and prevention of skin ageing.

Bathing in the Blue Lagoon, a specific geothermal biotope in Iceland has been known for many years to be beneficial for human skin in general and for patients with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis in particular. The scientific rationale for this empirical observation, however has remained elusive. We now report that extracts prepared from silica mud and two different microalgae species derived f...

Roles for the N- and C-terminal domains of phytochrome B in interactions between phytochrome B and cryptochrome signaling cascades.

Plants fine-tune light responses through interactions between photoreceptors. We have previously reported that the greening of Arabidopsis thaliana roots is regulated synergistically by phytochromes and cryptochromes. In the present study, we investigated the functions of the N- and C-terminal domains of phytochrome B (phyB) in the interactions between phyB and cryptochrome signaling cascades. ...

Root-shoot interaction in the greening of wheat seedlings grown under red light.

Wheat seedlings grown with roots exposed to constant red light (300-500 micromoles m-2 s-1) did not accumulate chlorophyll in the leaves. In contrast, seedlings grown with their roots shielded from light accumulated chlorophylls. Chlorophyll biosynthesis could be induced in red-light-grown chlorophyll-deficient yellow plants by either reducing the red-light intensity at the root surface to 100 ...

Predator-prey interactions mediated by prey personality and predator hunting mode.

Predator-prey interactions are important drivers in structuring ecological communities. However, despite widespread acknowledgement that individual behaviours and predator species regulate ecological processes, studies have yet to incorporate individual behavioural variations in a multipredator system. We quantified a prevalent predator avoidance behaviour to examine the simultaneous roles of p...
